We work with Happy Tails Rescue and their ESA Veteran program called Cody’s Heroes. I had interviewed a veteran so I could understand what his needs are emotionally and also dog wise. When you go through these interviews with all ESA candidates your heart becomes overwhelmed by their stories but excited to be apart of their journey that will help bring them comfort. So one particular I was not sure how long it would take to find a match I thought it would be a while because he needed a pretty special dog. I met this amazing rescue dog that seemed like she would be the perfect fit. When I had the veteran meet her I could see within moments how she helped calm and bring him comfort. It was truly the perfect fit! We are working right now with 5 ESA’s and their people along with 2 Veteran ESA’s and their people. It is so rewarding to see the changes these dogs bring in their lives and a blessing to see how these dogs were rescued and able to live a life doing what they love. This is why we love doing what we do because not every dog is born to be an ESA, which is why we focus on finding those matches after they reach the age of 8 months old. This is when they start to know who they are in their societal role and feel comfortable to weather the storm of their humans anxiety, OCD, PTSD, or physical needs. If they start doing this at a young puppy age when they are not done being raised themselves this can be overwhelming for them and lead to behavioral issues. It cannot be trained into them, so finding those dogs that can truly be the rock their human needs and enjoy being it is truly amazing!
